From Bruce Dawe, "Being poets in Australia" means to live in the Valley ' Eco
and being hard of hearing
means living in a Hall of Mirrors
be shortsighted and mean long journeys to get home and find a
RENT in the garden entrance
means listening to the window and look in the phone phone,
sharp talk to a page with your hands
quit school before the end of a lesson only
means to remember the sparrows in the bird sanctuary
and anglerfish in the World
Marino
means to be elsewhere or in ten thousand other conversations
back with a stick in his mouth and looked hopeful
wagging excuses.
From Bruce Dawe, "To be a poet in Australia"
is to live in Echo Valley
be hard of hearing and is to
Inhabit a Hall of Mirrors
and be short-sighted
is to make a long trip home
and find a TO LET sign on the front lawn
is to be listening through the window
peering into the telephone receiver
talking to a sharp page with hands
that left school just one lesson too early
is to be remembering sparrow
in Bird Life Park
a toad-fish
at Sea-World
is to be elsewhere or other
in ten thousand conversations
returning with gripped sticks in one's jaws
a hopeful look
and a tail wagging excuses.
